Stepfold

A staircase that rises step by step from a flat surface, powered entirely by the weight of the person using it.

How it works

With each step, the mechanism raises another section, gradually transforming the flat surface into a staircase

First Step

Level 1

Full Height

The first step activates the mechanism and raises the first section of the staircase. When lowered, this section can sit flush with the ground, leaving a flat surface.

Once all sections are raised, the staircase locks into position and functions like a conventional staircase. The mechanism can then be released to lower the steps and return the surface to its original state.

Internal Bevel Gears

A system of bevel gears, pinions, and gear racks transfers the downward force of each step into rotational movement. This movement drives the next section upward, allowing the staircase to rise progressively. Small locking elements hold each raised section in place.

Mechanism

The staircase is powered by the user's own weight, without electric motors or an external power supply. Its mechanical system coordinates the movement of each section, turning a simple step into the force that transforms the surrounding space.

Clean Energy Transfer

The Stepfold

Explores how public space can adapt to human movement. By using the weight of the person to transform a flat surface into a staircase, this entity demonstrates how responsive architecture can operate through simple mechanical principles rather than external power.
